Todd Murphy, The Jazz Lawyer
Todd Murphy is definitely an artists’ lawyer. First and foremost, he is passionate about music. Music of all kinds – and not just jazz. Pop, rock, rap, punk, hip-hop, and even classical all captivate Todd. He is especially interested in new artists and what they have to say. Second, and perhaps most important, Todd is a savvy business person who knows the entertainment business and how to make a deal. And, he knows how to protect the intellectual property rights – the rights created in your music or art – of his artists and bands without killing the deal.
Prone to wearing cowboy boots and vintage rock tee shirts, Todd Murphy can be found most Tuesday nights at the Rockwood on Allen and, on other nights, at other clubs on the Lower East Side or in Williamsburg discovering new music and talking to artists about their music business. When in LA, he likes to hang out at the Baked Potato or Winston’s. He maintains offices in New York (Jersey City) and Los Angeles (Century City). And, when not checking out other music, he is making his own music as a bass player who has a lot of fun leading his own jazz group.
After a number of years of going astray and working with big companies, he has finally returned to his roots: working with people – real people – not corporations or greedy business guys. With that kind of background and attitude, you can be sure he will look out for the Indie artist in every situation.
Todd Murphy works with independent artists of all kinds: painters, animators, film-makers, song-writers, musicians, DJs, bands, dancers, magicians, installation artists, and video game and app developers. He is known for his creativity in finding new approaches to making deals and is a tough negotiator. As a deal maker in today’s ever-changing music and entertainment business, Todd is literally creating new ways to define how business is transacted on a daily basis. He finds himself giving not just legal advice about protecting digital rights but business advice too. He gets into a deal not just at the end to work-out the legal documents but early-on to not just make the deal but create the opportunity. The band/lawyer relationship then, becomes much more of a creative business partnership and therefore much more productive.
